If you’re in the market for a new excavator magnet for your company, you’ve probably noticed most of the options are electromagnets or permanent magnets. Most people don’t know the differences between electromagnets and permanent magnets, so we put together a brief guide to help you understand. Read on if you’d like to learn more.

Permanent Magnet

As the name suggests, a permanent magnet has a constant magnetic field. The reason there’s always a magnetic field is that the magnet itself is made of ferrous materials like iron, nickel, and rare-earth metals like neodymium. Permanent magnets are often found in tools like magnetic sweepers that contractors use to clean their worksite from nails and screws. Permanent magnets aren’t as common as electromagnets in industrial applications because they can’t be deactivated.

Electromagnet

Electromagnets are made with a coil of wire that’s electrically charged from an external power source. The wire is usually enclosed by a ferromagnetic material to enhance the magnet’s strength. Because an electromagnet requires a power source, you have the ability to turn the magnet off when you don’t need it. You can also adjust an electromagnet’s strength accordingly with the levels of power supplied. If you need to transport your magnet frequently, an electromagnet would be the best choice because you can deactivate its magnetism. Alternatively, you must transport a permanent magnet carefully because of its constant magnetic field.

Now that you know the primary differences between electromagnets and permanent magnets, you can make an informed decision about your next magnet purchase. What you also need to know, however, is that not every magnet is made the same. Some magnet manufacturers cut corners and don’t take quality seriously.
