The World Steel Association (worldsteel) has published the 2017 edition of World Steel in Figures. The publication provides a comprehensive overview of steel industry activities, stretching from crude steel production to apparent steel use, from indications of global steel trade flows to iron ore production and trade.

Edwin Basson, Director General of worldsteel, said, “This year we are celebrating our 50th anniversary. Much has changed in 50 years – back in 1967, the world produced just less than 500 million tonnes of steel. In 2016, the world produced just over 1,600 million tonnes. Most of the growth came from new industrialising nations – Brazil, China, India, Iran and Mexico.

World Steel Association Releases its Short Range Outlook

 

The Brussels-based organization forecasts that global steel demand will decrease by 1.7 percent, to 1,513 million metric tons in 2015, following growth of 0.7 percent in 2014. Chinas steel demand is expected to decrease by 3.5 percent in 2015 and by 2 percent in 2016, following its demand peak in 2013, the organization says. (more…)

Cities receive protection from manhole cover theft

Manhole cover theft is the phenomenon of manhole covers being stolen, usually for resale as scrap. Long considered to be a childish prank or simple vandalism, this type of theft is often expensive to municipalities, and dangerous to their residents. In recent years, the theft of manhole covers for financial reasons (i.e. to sell them when scrap metal prices are high) has also become more common. Manhole covers cost about $300 each, and fetch about 10 percent of that value when sold as scrap. (more…)

Earth Day: Brass House at Ogden Nature Center

“Brass House” a copper, brass and steel birdhouse, displays at Ogden Nature Center.

Celebrate Earth Day 2014 by taking a stroll down Birdhouse Trail at the Ogden Nature Center to view 66 new birdhouses along with 70+ birdhouses that are all part of the Ogden Nature Center’s annual Birdhouse Exhibit, on display April 19 through August 30, 2014.

The 21st annual birdhouse competition asked participants for creative, functional, environmentally friendly and durable backyard habitats for birds. The competition targets local artists of all ages, offering a chance to submit one or two birdhouses, and to be rewarded for their work.

For 76 years, The San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge (known locally as the Bay Bridge) has been a complex of bridges spanning San Francisco Bay of the U.S. state of California. It has connected communities and has been part of a skyline for decades but now the eastern span is coming down. The Bay Bridge has undergone an eastern span replacement that is a construction project that will replace an unsafe cantilever portion of the Bay Bridge with a new self-anchored suspension bridge (SAS) and a pair of viaducts.
