The Brussels-based organization forecasts that global steel demand will decrease by 1.7 percent, to 1,513 million metric tons in 2015, following growth of 0.7 percent in 2014. This Coast Guard building along Little Harbor Road in Woods Hole dates back to 1917.
The Coast Guard is proposing to raze a 98-year-old building at its Woods Hole facility and build a new home for its aid-to-navigation and patrol boat teams, but the $7.75 million project is raising questions about construction, history and community character among residents. Along with the 5,700-square-foot building that is tagged for demolition, plans are to bring down a 1,400-square-foot prefabricated steel supply building and to remove a 1,100-square-foot modular administration building from Coast Guard Station Woods Holes grounds along Little Harbor Road, according to the agency. Ridgeway Public School, one of the oldest school buildings in Niagara, is being demolished to make room for a new school which will replace it next year.
Work began to demolish the school last week and will continue through the fall and into upcoming school year, so a set of four portables has been set up at Bertie Public School to accommodate students who would have otherwise been at Ridgeway Public in September. Originally, Ridgeway Public School wasn’t designated for demolition at all because a location for the new school was selected on Rebstock Road, but after an aggressive lobbying effort from residents of that neighborhood and several private meetings during the previous term of council, the original plan was scrapped and councilors chose instead to select the current Ridgeway Public site as the location for the new school. The new school will replace all three of the town’s west end schools, Ridgeway Public, Bertie Public and Crystal Beach Public schools. Ontarios Minister of Education, Liz Sandals, stopped by Ridgeway Public School herself back in February to announce the demolition and construction plans, and after touring the school, she said the building was well past its best before date.

A 123-year-old building on Washington Avenue will likely be demolished to expand Bobby and Steve’s Auto World, after receiving sign off from a city panel. The gas station chain is free to seek wrecking permits after no one stepped forward to appeal the August 11 decision of the city’s heritage preservation commission allowing demolition. The commission’s vote contradicted city staff, who had recommended that the property be protected and studied for possible historic designation. The demolition of 1207 Washington and some other structures will allow for easier access to gas pumps, as well as a widening of the narrow back alley to 12th Avenue. It is unclear if they will proceed with the demolition prior to city approval of the overall plans. Company co-owner Steve Williams said Tuesday that he will discuss it with his builder. “If tearing down expedites the process then we will. If tearing down later does not slow the overall project then we will wait.” In approving the demolition application, the heritage preservation commission found that the 1207 Washington building had lost most of its integrity due to in part to alterations – though it also sustained fire damage.

The work marked the beginning of the two-month demolition of the inverted pyramid, which opened in 1973, as well as the start of its $46 million redevelopment as Pier Park. By February, the Pier approach and the Pier head, the area that surrounds the inverted pyramid, will be taken out. In 2010, council members voted for demolition and to build a new Pier, but thousands of petition signers had other ideas. Besides facing a delay, the city has spent about $4 million of its $50 million Pier budget. Of the $46 million that remains, money for construction is set at $33 million. The debris was trucked to demolition contractor Sonny Glasbrenners recycling facility in Clearwater to be sorted and recycled, said Tom Gibson, the citys director of engineering. Kristin Brett, hired by the city to help market the Pier project, said the event will provide an opportunity for people to say goodbye.
