High school girls visit GCC construction trades class

Girls visit GCC for Women in Construction event sponsored by the GOISD’s Career Tech Education program.

Twenty-four sophomore and junior girls visited Gogebic Community College (GCC) and Gogebic-Ontonagon Intermediate School District’s (GOISD) building trades class project home in Bessemer as the final field trip of the Women in Construction events sponsored by the GOISD’s Career Tech Education program this school year.

The girls learned about safety at the worksite, including use of safety glasses and hard hats and then it was off to work. They had the opportunity to learn how to apply masonry stone on the front of the home, how to trim out an interior door, how to put up cement board siding on the exterior, and took a tour of the project home.

The Women in Construction events are designed to introduce female students to non- traditional career areas, such as the construction field,” noted Career Tech Education (CTE) Program Coordinator, Paulette Niemi. Earlier in the year, female students in Ontonagon County schools participated in a shed building project as part of their building trades program. The goal of the Women in Construction event is to give female students the opportunity to try out the CTE Construction classes and hopefully, interest some of them in taking the course during their high school years.

Manhole cover theft is the phenomenon of manhole covers being stolen, usually for resale as scrap. Long considered to be a childish prank or simple vandalism, this type of theft is often expensive to municipalities, and dangerous to their residents. In recent years, the theft of manhole covers for financial reasons (i.e. to sell them when scrap metal prices are high) has also become more common. Manhole covers cost about $300 each, and fetch about 10 percent of that value when sold as scrap. (more…)

American Recycler Equipment Attachements ESB 24V Magnet

American Recycler News: Equipment Spotlight | MAR 2014 Attachments (Moley ESB 24V Magnet)

American Recyler News magazine featured an equipment attachment article highlighting our 24-Volt Battery Scrap Magnets (ESB) in their March 2014 issue.

[pullquote]Using a magnet to gather only the material you want to load is an effective, inexpensive tool that can help increase profits.[/pullquote]

“Moley Magnetics manufactures scrap yard magnets, shears and grapples. Moley staff members often hear about two challenges that face most scrap recycling facilities: preventing the loss of tons of scrap to the dirt surface found in most facilities, and avoiding the loading of dirt into trucks meant to carry only scrap metal. Ron Slaby, sales manager, explained, “In either scenario, and after the bulk of the material is collected, operators then usually have an employee hand-pick and/or dig up what remains, or use a magnet to collect whatever scrap remains.

MGM AEG Arena Construction Begins

(Photo Credit: David Becker/Las Vegas Review-Journal)

Construction Begins on the 20,000-seat MGM/AEG arena in Las Vegas.

MGM AEG Arena Construction Begins | On a pleasant, sunny spring morning, MGM Resorts International and AEG officially launched the $375 million construction project with shovels hitting earth in a parking lot behind the Monte Carlo at 11:50 a.m. and confetti flying a few seconds later.

Demolition of existing buildings set for mid-month. Construction is expected to take 22 months, with a projected spring 2016 opening. The MGM/AEG Arena will be the centerpiece of an 8-acre, tree-lined entertainment and dining district dubbed “The Park,” located near the New York-New York and Monte Carlo casinos, between Las Vegas Boulevard and Interstate 15.

The 20,000-seat MGM/AEG arena plans to open without a National Basketball Association or National Hockey League tenant. That’s fine with MGM and AEG officials, who have crafted a business plan to tap a steady stream of mixed martial arts and boxing, concerts, award shows, college basketball and hockey tournaments and other sports. They anticipate about 100-150 events per year. The Las Vegas-based Ultimate Fighting Championship, the MMA fight event, promotion and media company, plans five or six annual fight shows at the new arena.
